The Hellenic Postal Service (Greek Post - ELTA after 1970) has issued over twenty definitive stamp series since World War II, featuring themes such as culture, landscapes, and mythology. This collection consists of a series of final artist's and trial colour proofs of stamps approved in 1953 for printing; it belongs to the 12-value series Ancient Greek Art. The selected themes aimed to showcase Greece’s glorious past, linking its cultural heritage to tourism promotion at a time when the country sought economic growth through tourism. The stamps include Mycenaean-era works such as the fresco of a boar hunt scene from the palace of Tiryns (2,400 drachmas), geometric pottery from the Athenian potter's quarter (Dipylon) (2,000 drachmas), and sculptured works such as the bust of Homer (300 drachmas) and Pericles (100 drachmas). Other depictions include Zeus of Αrtemision (500 drachmas), the Blond Youth’s head from the Athenian Acropolis (600 drachmas), and a symposium drinking cup (kylix) by the prominent ancient potter Exekias, featuring Dionysus and the Tyrrhenian pirates (4,000 drachmas). Until 1966, all Greek stamps bore only the inscription "ΕΛΛΑΣ." The designs bear an approval inscription and the official seal of the Ministry of Transport, Directorate of Postal Services of the Kingdom of Greece.
