The Hellenic Postal Service (Hellenic Post - ELTA after 1970) has issued over twenty definitive stamp series since World War II, featuring themes such as culture, landscapes, and mythology. This set consists of stamp proofs from the 12-value series Ancient Greek Art. Most designs were approved in November 1953 with conditions on colouring density, except for the head of the Charioteer of Delphi (1,200 drachmas), approved without changes in October 1953. The series was proposed by Pantelis Prevelakis (1909-1986), Professor of History of Art and head of the Advisory Council on Postal Stamps, who served as its artistic director until March 1952. Υannis Kefallinos (1894-1957), director of the Engraving Laboratory at the Athens School of Fine Arts, executed the designs. Subjects include the Panathenaic procession frieze (20,000 drachmas), the Minoan bull (200 drachmas), and Alexander the Great’s profile (1,000 drachmas). The latter was selected as one of the best stamps in the world for 1954. The designs bear an approval inscription noting the stated conditions and the official seal of the Ministry of Transport, Directorate of Postal Services of the Kingdom of Greece. The series' artistic quality promoted Greek stamps internationally, leading to reprints in new colours and denominations in 1955 and 1958.
