Mycenae Tourist Pavilion
Τουριστικό Περίπτερο Μυκηνών
Media date: 1953
This photo depicts the first tourist pavilion constructed by the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO) immediately after its re-establishment in 1951. The design was conceptualized and executed by the architect Kimon Laskaris. Additionally, the well-known artist Nikos Nikolaou was commissioned to create a 520x160 cm mural, which was incorporated into the project in early 1952. The tourist pavilions were integral part of the Greek tourist infrastructure of the 1950s and 1960s. They were developed by GNTO at strategic locations across the entire Greek territory, near archaeological sites and areas of exceptional natural beauty or along major roads. They were pioneering structures for their time, which, along with the Xenia hotels, reflected the vision and the talent of significant creators. For long, they operated almost monopolistically and became synonymous with the concept of tourism in Greece. GNTO constructed a total of around 60 tourist pavilions across Greece, significantly contributing to the development of road and touring tourism, while at the same time serving as a "model" for similar private initiatives that began to emerge later along the national highways.
