Collection of stamp proofs from the 1958 airmail series "Ports," consisting of seven values. The stamps were printed in sheets of 40 and 50, with dimensions of 26x42 mm. The series was designed by engraver A. Tassos, who, utilizing the offset multicolor technique, introduced more light and color into Greek stamps. The proofs bear the seals of the Aspioti-ELKA printing house, the numbering of the plates used beneath each stamp, and the official seal of the Ministry of Transport and Public Works, General Directorate of Posts of the Kingdom of Greece. The first airmail transport of Greek postal correspondence took place in 1918, and for this reason, the series was accompanied by a commemorative cancellation marking the 40th anniversary of this event. It was the last Greek issue of dedicated airmail stamps, as from then on, there was no distinction between airmail and regular postage. The stamps depict the ports of Piraeus, Ermoupolis (Syros), Thessaloniki, Kavala, Volos, Heraklion (Crete), and Patras. Their selection was not random, as these were Greece’s most significant maritime and commercial hubs, playing a key role in the country’s growing tourism sector and international connectivity and promotion of the country in the late 1950s.
